33 IGC excursion No 40, August 1 – 4, 2008 |
Number of particpants (min-max): 8 - 20. Date: 1-4 August 2008 (pre-conference). Travel to/from Kirkenes: Participants should travel to Kirkenes for the evening of Friday 1. August (see ‘Practical information’). The excursion ends in Kirkenes on Monday, 4.August at 18:00. Participants can leave the same evening, or spend an extra night in Kirkenes (at own expense) before taking a midday flight to Oslo on Tuesday 5.August. Cost: EUR 680 (exclusive of airfare to/from Kirkenes, and optional extra night 4-5. august) |
Description: The excursion will visit inner and outer coastal areas of Varanger and the lower Tana valley, where raised shorelines and deltas, including presently active deltas, are exceptionally well-preserved and easily accessible. The history of deglaciation and postglacial relative sea-level change, delta progradation, fjord-valley-filling and river terrace development in this area is well-documented through various morphological, sedimentological and geophysical studies. The excursion should appeal both to sedimentologists interested in clastic depositional environments and facies, and Quaternary geologists interested in postglacial sea-level change. The area has a strong arctic flavour and outstanding natural beauty. |
