Day by day itinerary

Day 3. Northern Varanger to Varangerfjorden (Kongsfjord - Kirkenes)

Day 3 starts with a visit to Sandfjorden, one of several, short valleys along the exposed Barents Sea coast, where cobbly and sandy raised beaches are exceptionally well preserved. We pass pre-glacial rock platforms cut into tilted Precambrian turbidites. We return via Tana to Varangerfjorden and visit a well-studied, raised ‘fan delta’ locality at Meskelva on the northern side of the fjord, and archaeological sites at Mortensnes, where there is evidence of continuous prehistoric settlement closely related to falling sea-level. We conclude with a visit to the Varanger Sami Museum before returning to Kirkenes.
