Day by day itinerary

Day 2. Tana to northern Varanger (Polmak - Kongsfjord)

Day 2 focuses on the morphology, facies and stratigraphic architecture of fjord-valley-fill deposits in the lower Tana valley, starting at the marine limit near the head of the fjord valley (Storfossen) and finishing at the modern Tana delta at the mouth of the valley, some 80 km downstream (Kaldbakknes, Høyholmen). Valley filling and terracing is explained with reference to a two-stage history of deglacial and postglacial sediment supply, falling relative sea-level, and depositional processes dominated by marine aggradation, delta progradation and fluvial incision. Thematically, the localities include an overview of valley fill history and terrace morphostratigraphy  (Storfossen, SE of Tana bru), sections showing deltaic, fluvial, aeolian and tidal rhythmite facies and terrace stratigraphy (NE of Tana bru, Masjok-south, Masjok-north), morphology, sediments and seismic architecture of the modern Tana delta (Kaldbakknes, Høyholmen), and modern fluvial, deltaic, tidal, beach and aeolian processes and bedforms at most of the localities. The day ends with a trip northeastwards across the low plateau of the Varanger peninsula to Kongsfjord, including a short stop to look at raised shorelines and glacial features on the outer Barents Sea coast.

12. Storfossen
Marine terraces of the Tana valley palaeofjord. Fluvial regime and spring ice-jams.

13. Tana bru (SE)
Overview of deglacial and postglacial terraces of the Tana fjord-valley fill.

14. Tana bru (NW)
Fluviodeltaic terrace morphology and facies (topset/foreset).

15. S. Mas’kejåkguolba (Masjok-south)
Prodeltaic tidal rhythmites. Multistorey fluvial succession.

16. N. Mas’kejåkguolba (Masjok-north)
Terrace stratigraphy showing fluvial and deltaic facies.

17. Kaldbakknes
View of the modern Tana delta at low tide.

18. Høyholmen
Emerging modern delta plain and wave-formed bars.  Younger Dryas rock terrace.

19. W of Grønneset
